Setting the Scene

Sketchbook one

Setting the scene is an Artist Residency in Coundon and Witton Park. Organised by Northern Heartlands. As part of this residency, artists Ronan Devlin and Dominic Smith will set up space in your community centres where you can come along and help form a creative community.

It will be practical and involve creating audio content, recording the sounds in your environment, hosting interviews, recording musicians, and working towards making a radio broadcast. It will also involve making zines (small self-made books), posters, stickers and badges to create a scene that celebrates local culture.

So far we have..

We met with people and have been introduced to Coundon and Witton Park

Recording audio and images. Thinking about the place and how it presents itself to us. Think about how we present ourselves when we are visiting and what we want to learn and share.

(Audio clip from a tour of Witton Park)

We met some interesting people and began thinking about how we can build a network of creative participants.

We are at the stage where we are getting a sense of the character of both places and how that changes from street to street. Our next steps are to put on some structured events for people to meet up, find inspiration and start some shared making.

A Tour.

Next Steps

Planning and leaving space

We will be taking two approaches: informal visits to collect and make work and slightly more formal organised activities that will include walking and gathering workshops and group activities that involve making and sharing over July and August.
